Job Description

Overview:

Provide diagnostic assessment, psychotherapeutic intervention, and mental performance consultation to support the wellbeing of student athletes. This position also requires after-hours coverage rotation for the general campus.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide counseling, diagnostic assessment, and crisis intervention to student athletes dealing with mental health and development challenges. Work with on campus and off campus resources to provide coordinated support to students in need. Provide culturally appropriate individual, group counseling, and outreach to diverse student populations. Develop treatment plans of action aimed toward prevention, treatment, and resolution of mental, social, emotional, and psychological function and distress. Refer to both on and off campus resources. (50%)
  • Serve as point of contact for 50% of the varsity athletic teams, including sports medicine staff, coaches, including providing consultations regarding wellness and mental performance matters. Provide scheduled outreach programming to teams, coaches, athletics support staff, and athletics administration, including but not limited to team workshops and coach/support staff psychoeducation. Provide consultation to athletics staff regarding student athletes of concern. (15%)
  • Provide diagnostic assessment and prevention in acute crisis such as risk of suicide, trauma, psychosis, and/or major campus emergency. Conduct clinical interview(s) to evaluate imminent danger to self or others, coordinate intervention with outside providers when appropriate. Provide psychological/clinical judgement when requested to administration including the Executive Director, Associate Director of Clinical Sport Psychology Services, Athletics Administration, and Student Affairs Administration. Participate in after hours on-call rotation for the Personal Counseling Center. (10%)
  • Provide consultation and representation of PCC /Clinical Sports Psychology Services with Athletics and Student Affairs in various campus initiatives via committee and liaison work as assigned. Participate in student athlete events and forums. Participate in PCC clinical case conference and administrative staff meetings. (10%)
  • Work in collaboration with the Associate Director of Clinical Sport Psychology Services and Athletics staff to maintain a staff presence within the Big East and NCAA organizations focused on student athlete mental health and wellness. Collaborate with other institutions to identify student athlete mental health trends and needs, collaborating with student and professional groups and organizations to develop partnership programming. (10%)

Marginal Duties:

  • Maintain records and clinical information consistent with professional standards and PCC practices in the electronic medical record system, including progress notes, risk assessments, and collateral contact documentation. (5%)
  • Perform all other duties as may be required.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology, masters in social work, psychology or counseling from an accredited institution. Licensed or license-eligible in Rhode Island required.
  • Mental Performance Consultant Certification preferred by not required.
  • One to three years' related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with student athletes in a higher education institution and understanding of NCAA mandates of such to ensure excellent services that meet and exceed NCAA standards preferred.
  • Solid consultation skills to be able to work with coaching and medical staff of teams regarding programmatic needs for teams.
  • Proficient diagnostic skills and excellent treatment planning skills needed to work individually with student athletes including but not limited to RED -S, trauma, mood, and anxiety disorders.
