Commitment:

12-16 hours per week for the duration of the internship. The weekly schedule is flexible to accommodate class and work schedules.

Must be available for orientation on January 7th, 2025

Must be available for final presentation of project on May 21st, 2025

Stipend: Unpaid; school credit can be earned for this internship in most cases.

Position Summary: Butterfly Pavilion's Volunteer Department is seeking an individual with an interest in non-profit volunteer programs and people management. The contributions of volunteers play an indispensable role in furthering Butterfly Pavilion's mission and volunteers are involved in nearly every aspect of Butterfly Pavilion's operations including animal care, horticulture, education, research, guest services, marketing, and events. The intern will gain exposure to all these areas by supporting the volunteers who serve in all departments of the zoo. The Volunteer Program Specialist Intern will report directly to the Volunteer Manager and assist in daily volunteer operations including recruitment, training, and retention. This is a great position for an individual to learn about the administration of volunteer programs and explore a career in people management.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities :

  • Maintain accurate volunteer records using Volgistics, volunteer management software program, to track hours, trainings, and documents.
  • Collaborate with staff in various departments to identify volunteer needs
  • Attend recruiting events within the community to attract qualified candidates (including fairs and festivals)
  • Assist the Volunteer Manager in organizing and implementing volunteer onboarding and orientation
  • Develop volunteer communications, publications, and information relevant to volunteers

Qualifications:

  • Driven, proactive, and resourceful team member
  • Efficiency in project and time management
  • Recent graduate or currently pursing a degree in business, museum studies, management, non-profit administration, environmental science, biology, or a related field
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working people
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to speak effectively in public

  • Equipment: Must have access to personal laptop or computer with internet connection
  • Must be available for orientation on January 7th, 2025
  • Must be available for final presentation of project on May 21st, 2025
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from Butterfly Pavilion
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age

  • At Butterfly Pavilion, the team member is occasionally exposed to moderate to loud environmental noise for extended periods of time. While performing the responsibilities of this position, the team member is required to talk and hear. The team member is occasionally required to reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The team member should be able to lift, carry and items up to 50 lbs.
